Design and build
Shane runs Flight RC, a specialist RC aircraft shop out of a home workshop on North Avon Road in Christchurch. By day he is an aircraft incident, quality and safety investigator for Air New Zealand Engineering. That is an extraordinary thing for a customer to know, and the old site said nothing about it. It was a plain white store that could have been selling anything.
The brief was to build Shane a Shopify presence that actually sold who he is. The strongest asset the shop has is not its price list, it is Shane. A real aircraft engineer standing behind every product, generous with his knowledge, running lean from a home workshop so he can stock deep and price fairly.
So the design leans all the way into that. A dark aviation and cockpit theme, near-black with a bold orange accent, a blueprint-style hero with wingspan and airfoil callouts, and the headline "Built by an aircraft engineer. Stocked for the obsessed." The home-workshop model, which a lazy build would hide, is reframed as the reason customers get better stock and fairer pricing. The category grid, new arrivals and brand partners all pull from the real catalogue of more than 2,400 parts, models and accessories.
The challenge was turning a generic hobby store into a specialist shop with a clear reason to buy from Shane rather than a faceless overseas site. The trust signal was sitting there the whole time in his day job, and the whole theme is built to put it front and centre. The result is a store that reads like it is run by someone who lives and breathes aircraft, because it is, and that tells first-time trainers and seasoned scale builders alike that they are in the right place.
