A Shopify store is easy to start. Hard to get right.

Shopify makes it look simple. Pick a theme, upload some products, hit launch. And six months later you're wondering why customers aren't checking out, why shipping costs are wrong, why your tax setup is a mess, and why the store feels nothing like your brand.

A proper first build means thinking through everything before you launch — your customers' actual buying journey, the right Shopify plan for your stage, payment gateways that work in NZ, shipping rates that don't cost you margin, GST set up correctly from day one, a theme that converts rather than just looks good, and the integrations you'll need as you grow.

We've done this enough times to know what matters and what doesn't. We won't oversell you, and we won't undersell you either.

Built for businesses ready to sell online properly.

Existing businesses going online

Brick-and-mortar shops, service businesses with products, or sellers currently on Trade Me, Facebook, or Instagram who are ready for their own store. We translate your existing brand and customers onto Shopify properly.

New brands launching with e-commerce

Starting fresh with a product idea? We build the store at the same time you're nailing the brand — design, photography direction, store structure, and launch strategy together.

Established businesses replacing a basic site

You have a website, but it's a Wix landing page or an old Squarespace that doesn't really sell. Time to upgrade to a real e-commerce platform that grows with you.

What a proper Shopify build actually includes.

Every project's different, but here's the work that goes into a real new build — not a $500 Fiverr template.

Laptop showing analytics and online store planning — minimal professional workspace

Discovery and store strategy

We start by understanding your products, customers, and goals. The strategy work upfront saves you thousands in rebuilds later.

Theme selection and customisation

We pick the right Shopify theme for your business and customise it to your brand — colours, typography, layout, and the small details that make a store feel professional.

Product setup and structure

Collections, product pages, variants, tags, metafields, search and filtering. Done properly so your store is easy to browse and easy to expand.

NZ payment gateway setup

Shopify Payments, Stripe, Afterpay, Laybuy, POLi, Apple Pay — set up the right combination for NZ shoppers and your margins.

Shipping and fulfilment configuration

NZ Post, CourierPost, custom rates, free shipping thresholds, click-and-collect, weight-based or carrier-calculated shipping where it makes sense.

GST and NZ tax setup

IRD-compliant tax handling from day one, including overseas sales rules and digital products if relevant.

Email and customer flows

Welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase, review requests. Set up in Shopify Email or Klaviyo depending on your scale.

SEO and analytics foundation

Proper page titles, meta descriptions, structured data, Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, and conversion tracking — wired in before launch, not as an afterthought.

Apps and integrations

Reviews, loyalty, subscription, accounting (Xero), inventory, shipping. We pick the lean stack that does what you need without bloating your monthly bill.

Launch and handover

Pre-launch testing, soft launch, full launch. Plus training so you can manage products, orders, and content yourself afterwards.

Why Christchurch businesses choose Dori Media.

Christchurch heritage tram on the City Tour route

We run e-commerce ourselves.

Dori Media operates Jimny Rentals NZ — including its Shopify store, shop.jimny.co.nz. We build stores knowing exactly what matters when revenue's on the line.

We solve the hard parts.

Custom shipping logic, complex inventory rules, multi-currency, app conflicts, broken redirects. The technical work most agencies subcontract or quietly avoid, we do in-house.

We're here, not in Auckland or Sydney.

Christchurch-based. Available for in-person meetings. Working in your timezone, understanding your market.

We stay on the hook.

As your Shopify Partner of record, we're invested in the lifetime of your store — not just until the invoice clears. Migration is the start of the relationship, not the end of it.

Great Range Products

Problem
A growing Shopify store needed carrier-calculated shipping logic that no off-the-shelf app could deliver — multiple weight tiers, regional rates across NZ, oversized item rules, and accurate quotes at checkout.
Solution
We built a custom Shopify carrier-calculated shipping integration that handles every rule the standard apps couldn't, working directly with their carriers' rate tables.
Outcome
Accurate shipping quotes at checkout. Reduced support load from incorrect shipping charges. Fewer abandoned carts at the shipping step.

Jimny Rentals NZ Shop (shop.jimny.co.nz)

Problem
An outdated Shopify store running off-brand visuals, with legacy "closing down" messaging still showing months later, and no clear path connecting the merch store back to the main rental brand.
Solution
Full visual rebuild aligned to Jimny Rentals' brand identity. Custom "How it Works" section. Removed legacy content. Integrated with the wider Jimny Rentals ecosystem so customers move smoothly between rental and merch.
Outcome
A store that finally looks and feels like part of the brand. Ready to sell merchandise to Jimny's existing customer base.

Adam — Dori Media

About Adam

Hi, I'm Adam.

I'm Adam — Christchurch born and raised, running Dori Media since 2010.

Over the past 16 years I've built websites and Shopify stores for everyone from Fonterra and other large NZ brands down to local Canterbury businesses just getting started. Same care either way.

I've built and sold Shopify stores over the years, and I run shop.jimny.co.nz for my own business Jimny Rentals NZ. So when I'm working on your store, I'm building it the way I'd build my own.

If you're a Christchurch business owner who wants to do Shopify properly — no agency fluff, no offshored dev work, no surprises — let's talk. Wherever you are in Canterbury, I'm happy to come and have a coffee.

Common questions about new Shopify builds.

Most new builds take 4–8 weeks from kickoff to launch, depending on the size of your catalogue, how much custom design work is involved, and how quickly product photos and copy come together. Simple stores can launch faster; complex ones with custom features take longer. We give you a fixed timeline after the discovery call.

Yes — that's the goal. Shopify is built for owners to manage day-to-day. We hand over a clean, well-organised store with training so you can add products, write blog posts, run sales, and handle orders without needing us. We're here for the bigger stuff when you need it.

Not before we start, but you'll need it before launch. We can recommend Christchurch product photographers we trust, or work with what you have if photos come later. The store structure and design get built around your products either way.

Your Shopify subscription (typically NZ$50–150/month depending on plan), domain renewal (~$30/year), and any apps you use (often $0–100/month combined). Payment processing fees are a percentage of sales — we'll walk you through the realistic monthly cost during the discovery call.

Christchurch is our primary focus and where in-person meetings happen. We do take projects from elsewhere in NZ — and the occasional Australian one — when the project's a strong fit.

Most of our new build projects sit between $5,000 and $15,000 + GST, depending on scope. We give you a fixed quote after the initial 30-minute call — no hourly billing surprises.

We stay on as your Shopify Partner of record, available for ongoing tweaks, feature additions, and support. Many clients move to a small monthly retainer after launch; others come back project-by-project.
